Navigating the Swamp of Caregiving.

An Introduction to a Seven-Part Series

While considering what I would name this small business, I wondered what would fully capture the complexities of caregiving for someone with dementia. I wanted the name to be empathetic and honest, yet positive as well.

On a long drive to my hometown in Iowa I remembered that my automatic response to those touring the memory care communities where I previously worked was “If you are at the point of touring memory care communities, that tells me you are in the weeds of caregiving. If I can help you answer any questions let me know. I’m happy to help.” I found that the use of the word “weeds” seemed to land quite empathetically in these very quick conversations. It’s relatable, isn’t it?

On one occasion, a gentleman stopped, looked at me straight-faced and said, “Weeds?!? It’s more like a SWAMP!” And there it was! The perfect visual concept of the reality of caregiving in the world of dementia care, navigating something as complex as a swamp. I googled, “How to walk through a swamp.” I stumbled upon a Wikihow* article on how to trek through a swamp, and coincidentally every single instruction is a perfect analogy for an aspect of caregiving.

And so begins this seven-part series on how to navigate the complexities of caregiving for someone with dementia. Rest assured, the fact that you are here for some insight or empathy on how to navigate the terrain shows great wisdom on your part. Stepping into a swamp unprepared or alone is not for the faint of heart! I’m so glad you are along for the journey!
