Gift Ideas for Those Caring For Adults with Memory Impairment (dementia)

As the number of partners in dementia care continue to escalate, the need for our community and neighbors to care for carers increases all the more. Giving care to someone with memory impairment can be a long-suffering, tiring, weary, occasionally sad, and time-consuming experience so we put together a list of items that might make great gifts them. Let us know what you think or if we are missing great ideas!
Neck and back massager with heat. Perhaps there is no time for a spa day or a massage but this handy personal heated back and neck massager may just do the trick in less time.
Cozy slippers for women. While we all like to be cozy in the winter, there is something practical about having rubber-bottom slippers that make it safe to walk outside or to the mailbox in a pinch. Stay warm, dry, and slip-proof with these lovelies!
Slippers for men. The intentionality of the rubber bottoms is important. This allows for a bit of increased safety in navigating wood or tile floors (ideally reducing risk of falling), and feels safer if taking a little walk outside to bring the garbage out or check the mail.
Self-heating mug. Let’s be honest, caregiving does not always allow us to sit long enough to drink a cup of coffee while it’s still hot. This clever little mug keeps drinks warm or hot, per your preference while you navigate the day.
Stanley Cup. In the long list of things we need to do in a day, drinking fluids is high on the list but who wants to drink luke-warm water? Keep drinks cold for longer with this insulated cup and enjoy a cold beverage that stays cold!
Men’s robe. Bathing can be a pretty big deal for caregivers and those they care for! A cozy warm robe may just help keep everyone comfortable in the process so they don’t get chilly and upset. This robe comes in larger sizes as well allowing for easy on/off for most people.
Women’s Robe. Showers may not be what they once were as a caregiver and this robe allows you to quickly cover up if a need in the home asks you to leave the bathroom sooner than you expected. This robe comes in queen sizes so it will comfortably fit most. The zipper also allows for navigating without the risk of opening which is a smart idea when caring for others!
Weighted Blanket. Nothing is the same as a real hug to release tension and stress but a weighted blanket gets pretty close! Find a bit of calm in the chaos with a weighted blanket. Be still and rest for a bit, being slowed down by this soft throw.
Caregiver Key Chain. Sometimes it’s the little things that speak volumes. Let a caregiver know that their actions are changing the world for their person they care for. It’s a small token to recognize huge tireless selfless efforts. This is a great idea for a family caregiver but also as a gift for staff that work in the healthcare industry including social worker, CNAs, nurses, practitioners, etc.

Blanket of Encouragement. When thank yous and recognition for all the efforts of a caregiver feel rare, sometimes it’s nice to wrap ourselves in words of kindness and encouragement. This blanket is extremely soft. Just be sure to get one long enough to cover your toes!
Adult Coloring Book - Maybe Swearing will Help. Let’s be honest, caregiving ellicits a swear word or two along the way. Enjoy this funny adult coloring book as it reduces anxiety and causes a bit of a chuckle. Heaven knows that humor is a valued commodity while caregiving!
Large Dry Erase Calendar. If you are not yet a Google calendar user, this large dry-erase monthly calendar might be helpful for you AND the one you are caring for. It is easy to see, easily changeable, and brightly colored. Keep everyone on the same page!
Daily Reminder To Do List. Sometimes all a caregiver can do is one day at a time. This adorable notepad allows us to look at one day and plan and prioritize all that needs to be done. If we have to do hard things, we might as well use cute paper!
Gel Pens. If we have to take notes and keep track of things, we may as well use nice pens! These are fan favorites!
Colored Pens. Keep those notes and calendars organized with color pens! When the daily grind can be a bit of a bore, spice up the day with a fun colored pen at least!
Gift Box for Caregivers. While I want to share a word of caution around the candle, what’s not to love about all the other bits to this gift box! They are bound to love one of these things if not all!
